ASTOUNDING, Jan 1942, Hubbard, Williamson, et al

The first bedsheet-sized issue of this great Street & Smith SF pulp got the new format off to a rousing start. In addition to Jack Williamson’s cover story “Breakdown,” there are novelettes by L. Ron Hubbard (“The Invaders”) and Eric Frank Russell (“Mechanistria”) and an installment of E. E. “Doc” Smith’s “Second Stage Lensmen,” along with pieces by L. Sprague de Camp, Malcolm Janieson, and Norman Knight. Cover by Hubert Rogers, who also contributes interior illos, as do Paul Orban and others. A truly memorable issue of this groundbreaking SF title from its Golden Age. Condition: Fine, maybe Fine Plus. Only noticeable defect is a vertical stress crack on the spine between the “I” and “N” in Astounding. Pages have a hint of yellowing but are extremely supple. Really a super copy.
