Lin Carter, TOLKIEN: A LOOK BEHIND THE LORD OF THE RINGS, 1st, high grade

Ballantine #01550, March 1969. First edition (stated). A book in Ballantine’s “Adult Fantasy” line, Tolkien is a fan’s delight: an entire book of Carter essays on various aspects of the Rings trilogy and its author’s place in popular culture. The book has been reprinted many times in different editions, but the March ’69 first printing is now uncommon, especially in grade (True Believers referred to their copies many times). Condition: Fine. This is almost certainly an unread copy, with no hint of reader’s crease or spine stress. It’s exceptionally clean and tight, with off-white paper and vivid yellow/orange edge staining. It does, however, have a very small label with a previous owner’s last name pasted onto the inside front cover’s upper left corner. A very collectable copy of this old favorite.
